Second skin

This project is created in collaboration with Vera Crisostomo, a multidisciplinary artist from Spain. She is a sculptor, painter, textile artist and on occasion a brilliant model. She collected shells from her hometown and sew them into a knit textile that closely represents Spanish shawls. She also created body prints (seen below) using her body as a stamp.
We connected on the idea of the skin extending beyond the body, filled with imperfections and histories. The shells represent our love for the ocean, our connection to our home but also disease and imperfections. To me the idea of skin is closely related to the idea of fabrics and how it can be sewn, stretched and manipulated. And how closely it is attached to kinship and womanhood, acting as a veil and as an armour. The shells also represent the idea of an exoskeleton, an outwardly projection of strength and traces of absence.
